In the early hours of June 22, the United States launched a massive attack on nuclear facilities in Iran, just ten days after Israel began its own bombing campaign targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites. This new offensive, which has raised tensions to critical levels, was immediately rejected by the United Nations (UN), which warned of the danger of an uncontrollable escalation in the region.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned any action that worsens the situation, emphasizing that the region “can hardly withstand another cycle of destruction.” Guterres reminded all states of their obligation to respect the UN Charter and international law, stressing that the only possible solution is dialogue and negotiation.

The Iranian government insisted on the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and accused the United States of flagrantly violating international law. Tehran warned that it will respond to the aggression and that Washington’s actions put US interests in the region at risk, which could trigger an even greater escalation of the conflict.

China joined the condemnation, accusing the United States of violating the UN Charter with its attacks. Progressive voices and left-wing alternative media have pointed out that the US-Israeli offensive is yet another example of Western double standards and disregard for the sovereignty of Global South nations.

Many voices agree that the international community must prioritize stability and avoid a confrontation with unpredictable consequences, demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to serious negotiations.

The recent US aggression against Iran marks an extremely dangerous turn for the Middle East. The UN and various international actors insist that only diplomacy and respect for international law can prevent a greater catastrophe. The international community must act urgently to halt the spiral of violence and protect peace and the sovereignty of peoples.
